Imran Tahir tops ICC ODI rankings’ for bowlers

Imran Tahir

South Africa’s leg-spin bowler Imran Tahir has topped the ICC rankings for bowlers following his team’s successful 5-0 series sweep of Sri Lanka in the recently concluded ODI series. Tahir surpassed New Zealand quick Trent Boult and West Indies spin bowler Sunil Narine to claim the top spot.

South Africa has also dethroned Australia, whom they had beat 5-0 at home last year, to become the No. 1 ODI side in the International Cricket Council (ICC) rankings following the 88-run victory against Sri Lanka in the final ODI match. It was South Africa’s eleventh win on the trot, enough to return them back to the number 1 position in two years.

“We are excited to be back at the top of the ICC ODI Team Rankings,” de Villiers said.

“We have had some trials since the World Cup two years ago but have worked hard to rebuild and to gain some form and consistency in this format.

“It’s an important year for us with the ICC Champions Trophy in June and regaining the No.1 position is a step in the right direction for our preparation ahead of the event.

“It’s a tight contest at the top so it’ll be important for us to continue putting in the performances so that we can hold onto the position.”

South African Skipper Faf Du Plessis, who was also rewarded with the Man of the Series award in the recent series against Sri Lanka, has also achieved a career high rank in ODI’s (4th). His fellow teammate AB de Villiers stands at 2nd position, while Amla and De Kock are situated at No. 5 and No. 7.
