INDvAUS, 3rd Test: Cummins, Pujara shine on day 3 in Ranchi

On an absorbing, tense day three in Ranchi, Pat Cummins and Cheteshwar Pujara both stood up for their teams to leave the third Test on even footing.

By the close of play on three, Pujara had propelled his team to 360 with four wickets still intact, needing another 91 runs to match the visitors’ tally. The 29-year-old showcased stout defense and sheer concentration throughout the day, as he soaked up 328 deliveries to fashion a spirited Indian response to Australia’s first innings total.

Cummins showed why selectors were so adamant to recall him in the Test team in place of injured Mitchell Starc, as he bowled magnificently with both new and old ball, claiming crucial wickets of Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane and Ravi Ashwin. But his fitness will be tested given he was slotted straight into the team after just one Sheffield Shield match.

The match is evenly poised right now, with both teams fighting to stay in the game and take supremacy over the other. But a couple of quick wickets for Australia on the fourth morning could open the match up for tourists.
