Karachi Kings have qualified for the playoffs, as they dominated the final league game to complete a six-wicket win over the insipid Islamabad United at the Dubai Internation Stadium on Sunday(February 26).
After the rain had delayed the start of the game by 90 minutes, Karachi won the crucial toss and opted to bowl first due to the unpredictability that rain brings into the game. Islamabad United managed a below-par 123 in their allotted 15 overs, mainly due to a contribution from the West Indies opener Dwayne Smith, who scored timely 49 off 36 balls.
Sohail Khan(2-23) and Imad Wasim(0-20) were the pick of the bowlers for Karachi as they maintained neat lines with wily variations.
Chasing 124 for win, Chris Gayle — who warmed bench in the last game — peaked just at the right time for Karachi as he came out all cylinders firing. He struck a scintillating 17-ball 44, which also included five sixes in the space of just eight deliveries, to put Karachi way ahead in the run-chase.
With this win, Karachi has now qualified for the playoffs and will face Islamabad United once again in the eliminator match on Tuesday(Febraury 28). Lahore Qalandar’s journey is over as they finished last in the points table.
